Pinay in the UK: Getting a Provisional Driving License

Driving is not a right but a privilege. Anybody can learn how to drive but not everyone can become a driver. It takes time and patience.

In the UK, I can say that it’s important to learn how to drive. The trains, buses, trams and any public transportation run on a schedule. If you miss a connection, you’ll spend a long time waiting for the next one. There are also a lot of places with no public transport access.

Whilst in the Philippines, jeepneys run anytime. You don’t have to worry on schedules, unless there’s a nationwide strike which rarely happens. There are also trikes available wherever. Even for a 500-meter-walk, most of us still rely on trikes.

When I started working, I decided to learn how to drive as it takes me 1.5 hours going to work. Sometimes, it takes longer if there are delays in the train schedule. Please take note that I applied my provisional license through online. After 16 days, I received my license and the documents I’ve submitted. I noticed that online application is cheaper than applying by post. I only paid £34. The application by post costs £43.

1. Go to the UK government’s official website. Go to this link. Click ‘Start Now’. If you’re a new user, click ‘Register’ under New User.

2. Just follow the instructions and fill in the fields with the correct entries.

3. Once completed, you will be asked to pay. Online applications cost £34.

4.After a week, I received a letter/form from DVLA. After completing the form, I sent it back to them along with my BRP card and marriage certificate. The reason for including my marriage certificate is to have my married name appear on my provisional license. My BRP card is still on my maiden name as I’ve not yet updated my passport.

5. After 2 weeks, I received my provisional license. And after 2 days, I received my BRP card and marriage certificate.

The good thing with having a provisional license is you can use it anywhere when proving your identity as it’s a valid ID.

The next step you need to do is booking a driving lesson. It’s always recommended to learn through a licensed driving instructor. I’m currently on my 4th driving lesson. So far, so good.

Hi sis, yup BRP and marriage certificate along with the form. I included my marriage certificate kasi hindi pa married name yung BRP ko at that time. Make sure lang na yung name na ilalagay mo sa form is your married name. Hope this helps! xx
