App Review: Too Good To Go

With the rising costs of living here in the UK, I always strive on how to find good deals when shopping. It’s not rocket science – we all work hard and every penny should be spent wisely. On top of that, I also look for ways to live more sustainably.

One day, I was queuing at Starbucks after work to order a drink when I noticed a customer showing something to the staff. I heard him say, “Too Good To Go.” A couple of minutes later, the staff handed him a bag of pastries. To cut a long story short, after getting my drink, I did a quick Google search.

Too Good To Go is a mobile app that helps users save food from going to waste. Through the app, you can purchase a surprise bag from participating stores, with prices that may vary depending on when you make the purchase. While you won’t know exactly what’s inside the bag, you’ll get a general idea based on the type offered. For example, at Starbucks, they offer a Standard Surprise Bag, which might include pastries, sandwiches, or wraps, and a Sweet and Pastry Bag, which could contain muffins and other baked goods. Each order also comes with a designated time slot for pickup.

There are plenty of participating stores in major cities. I often visit Manchester, and whenever I check the map on the app, there are always lots of options to choose from. I think it’s a great initiative to help prevent good food from going to waste.

One day, while I was in Manchester, I decided to try a Standard Surprise Bag. The whole process was very straightforward. You simply buy the bag through the app, make the payment, and follow the instructions provided. When you arrive at the store, you show your proof of purchase — they scan the code, and you receive your bag. It’s that easy!

For the Standard Surprise Bag I purchased, I paid just £4.19. Inside, I received five different items: two croissants, one chocolate twist, and two chicken wraps. Normally, these would cost over £20 if bought individually — but I got them all for just £4.19. What a bargain!

Do I recommend the Too Good To Go app? Absolutely! It’s a great way to get food at a bargain price. Not only are you saving money, but you’re also playing a part in reducing food waste — a win-win for both your wallet and the planet.
